Quiet hours don't stop a call you asked for at a set time.

Android: switch on Instant notifications (Connections → Phone and notifications) so the phone can ring. iPhone: rings while the app is open; otherwise a “Sara is calling” notification (needs your Apple push key, Settings → Phone and notifications).

Sara can send you photos of herself. Her own portraits cost nothing. New pictures are made with xAI Grok Imagine from her look, using your Grok subscription (or an xAI API key); she asks first unless you change take_photo above.

Once a day at the time you pick, Sara sends a short message with the weather and what's on your list (due to-dos and reminders). It arrives like her other messages: in chat, as a notification and on Telegram/Discord if linked. Weather comes from Open-Meteo (free, no account).

For events on your Google Calendar that have an address, Sara works out how long it takes to get there from home and texts you when it's time to leave. Online meetings and events without an address are skipped. Addresses and routes come from OpenStreetMap (free, no account); travel times don't include traffic, so add a little extra time.

Off by default. When it's on, Sara has no limits beyond the legal ones that always apply: she says she's an AI when sincerely asked, she offers crisis help, and anything sexual involving minors is always blocked. What's allowed then depends on the model you choose: its own rules are the gate.

Set it up (about 10 minutes, once)

She reads your email and calendar through Google's own APIs, using a small Google app that you own, so nothing goes through anyone else. Reading is automatic; drafting, sending and adding events always ask you first.

Open Google Cloud Console and make a project (any name, e.g. "Sara").
Turn on the Gmail API and the Google Calendar API (press Enable on each).
Open Google Auth Platform → Get started: app name "Sara", your email, Audience External.
Under Audience, press Publish app (otherwise Google signs her out every 7 days). Google will call it unverified; that's expected for your own app.
Under Clients → Create client → Web application. Under Authorized redirect URIs add exactly:
Copy the Client ID and Client secret it shows into the boxes below and press Save.
Press Sign in with Google. On the "Google hasn't verified this app" page choose Advanced → Go to Sara, and leave all the boxes ticked.

Using another email provider? Email and calendar with an app password are under "Tools from other programs" below (Fastmail, iCloud, Outlook and more).

Only needed if you want her to push to GitHub. Make a fine-grained token at github.com → Settings → Developer settings → Personal access tokens, for just the repositories you choose, with Contents: Read and write. Pushing still asks you first. Delegating to Claude Code or Grok Build needs those subscriptions signed in (Models → Subscriptions).

What she knows about the code in each workspace: how to build and test it, its layout and rules, and the notes she keeps (decisions, conventions, commands). She looks again by herself every hour; coding conversations and her team use it.

Let her see and control your home through Home Assistant: lights, switches, thermostats, locks, blinds, scenes. She can look on her own; every change asks you first. Your Home Assistant must be reachable from this server (for example your Nabu Casa address, or over Tailscale).

Notifications

Get her reminders and messages on this device even when Sara isn't open. On iPhone, first add Sara to your Home Screen (Share → Add to Home Screen) and open her from there.

Apple only delivers notifications to the iPhone app when this server signs them with an Apple push key. One-time setup, about 3 minutes:

On developer.apple.com → Keys, press +, tick Apple Push Notifications service (APNs), and download the key (a file named AuthKey_XXXXXXXXXX.p8; Apple lets you download it once).

Passkeys

Sign in with your fingerprint, face or device PIN instead of the long token. The passkey stays on your phone or computer (or in your password manager); nothing secret is sent. Works in web browsers over https.

Two-step sign-in

When it's on, signing in with the owner token also asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, 1Password, Apple Passwords…). Passkeys and new-device codes don't need it. Lost your phone? On the server, sudo sara reset-token turns it off.

A backup has everything needed to rebuild Sara on a new server, including your keys, so keep downloaded copies private. Restore one on the server with sudo sara restore <file>.

If this server dies, backups on it die too. Sara can put an encrypted copy of each daily backup somewhere else. It's encrypted with your passphrase: keep the passphrase in your password manager, because without it the copies can't be opened.

Download everything (chats, memories, to-dos, reminders, notes) as one file, or bring in a file from another Sara. Keys and passwords are blanked out in the export; add your provider keys again after moving.

New versions bring fixes and new things to do. Updating makes a backup first, then installs and restarts Sara (about a minute; conversations in progress stop). If the new version doesn't start properly, Sara goes back to the version she had by herself.

This server updates from the command line. On the server run sudo sara update (Docker: docker compose pull && docker compose up -d).

Replies you reported with ⚑. Each is kept here; unless you unticked it, it was also sent to the app's developer (only the reply, the reason and your note).
